There are a couple things you should know before reading this review. 1: This wasn’t my first time at Liberty Bistro. Back in 2010, I wined dined here. 2. My evening didn’t go the way I planned it at all.

If you remember from this post, I was feeling awful a while back. After 4 days of bed rest & electrolytes, I was beginning to feel normal again. This meant I was ready to get up & DO something. Or at the very least, brush my hair. What better way to celebrate my return to functional society then to go out to dinner right? My mom was forced was willing to accompany me. She’s so nice.

We decided to go somewhere in New Braunfels. Why New Braunfels? Because everyone knows the restaurants in the Schertz/Cibolo/Selma area are a down right shame (unless you like Jalisco style Mexican food; in which case you should move to this area immediately). Plus, my Mom was already coming from the Alamo Heights area & didn’t feel like back tracking.

Liberty Bistro was selected for a few reasons. One being that I had been there before. I had crab cakes & they were divine. Granted, it was a while back…but I still stand by them being delish (did I just type delish?). We weren’t looking to run the risk of a disappointing meal. Second, neither of us was up for eating big entrees. Upon investigation we found that Liberty Bistro has a well-rounded small plate selection. That pretty much sealed the deal.

So off we were, camera in tow, to have a delicious meal. Or so we THOUGHT…queue dramatic three note musical sting.

Liberty Bistro is located in the downtown New Braunfels area. It’s pretty cute around there & a lot of restaurants are in buildings that used to serve as post offices & things like that. Liberty Bistro itself is inside the basement of an old 1929 City Hall building, pretty cool if you ask me.

That’s my mom walking down into the basement. She didn’t want to be photographed so pretend you don’t see her. See who?

Once you enter down the stairs, you come in through the bar. It appears that Liberty Bistro has quite a following. You know when you can tell a regular when you see one? Well, they are there, sipping martinis & eyeballing the “non-locals” as they walk by. Ok, it’s not THAT dramatic but you do get the vibe that it’s a family run place where people tend to know each other. Not a bad thing. The décor has a rustic meets contemporary feeling. It’s dimly lit with candles & modern light fixtures on the ceiling. Comfy booths surround the dining room with wine bottles, corks, & old bookshelves strategically placed around for decoration. Personally, I loved the atmosphere & found it to be just as charming as I remembered.

Once we were seated, we looked at the menus & took a second to decide the game plan. A couple minutes later we smelled something burning. Word of caution: the cute tea light candles on the table WILL burn your menu if you aren’t paying attention. Hoping our server didn’t notice my negligent menu behavior, we ordered.

We started off with drinks: a malbec for my mom & a glass of champagne for myself (both were $5 bucks a piece & very generously poured). Following that was housemade Focaccia bread. Our small plate selection included: the Liberty Salad, the Poblano Relleno, the Gnocchi, & the Bleu Cheese Flatbread. For dessert, we shared a chocolate martini.

Malbec & Champagne, yes they were as big as they look!

The bread was delicious but super absorbent. It literally sucked up all the olive oil on the plate, making it a tad messy to eat.

Recommended by the server, the liberty salad was delicious! Field greens, tomato, cucumber, avocado with a vingerette

The Poblano Relleno was described to be a stuffed avocado with sofrito & a sweet onion glaze. Honestly, all I tasted was sweet onion. The "sweet" flavor was so strong that it overpowered everything. I didn't enjoy this at all.

I had high hopes for this guy as I am a bleu cheese lover. This flatbread was topped with prosciutto, candied lemon & roasted garlic. I wouldn't believe that it was anything but bleu cheese if I didn't physically see the other toppings. The bleu flavor was so strong that even I couldn't take it.

We couldn’t taste any of the toppings because the cheese overwhelmed everything. The bleu flavor was so strong that even I couldn’t take it. Too bad because the candied lemons sounded really interesting.

Proof that there was actually toppings on this flatbread! I should've listened to my mom & ordered the smoked salmon flatbread instead.

The gnocchi was topped wtih a chipotle cream sauce & had spinach, tomato, & Parmesan. We both liked the gnocchi, compared to everything else, but it was a little over sauced. As you can see from the picture, it was drowned. It was very rich & tasty though for the most part.

Maybe I was expecting an unrealistic version of a chocolate martini. This was very light in color & tasted like watered down baileys irish cream. There was no chocolate syrup garnish or chocolate rimmed glass. At the end, we noticed a lone maraschino cherry plopped in the bottom...

I honestly thought this was going to be an easy review full of positive remarks. Unfortunately, I was really surprised & disappointed with the food this go around. It could just be an issue of taste preferences/unlucky menu choices as opposed to the actual food’s execution (minus the Bleu Cheese Flatbread because I love bleu cheese) Even though I didn’t enjoy my latest experience, it won’t deter me from going back. The atmosphere, drinks, & memory of my 2010 visit warrant another trip before I condemn it completely. My above food score takes the 2010 visit into consideration as well. It’s only fair.

Bottom Line: Liberty Bistro really is a fun place to go. Considering the delicious entree I had before, I’d play it safe & splurge on them as opposed to the small plates (unless you’re just going for drinks). Trust the wait staff as far as recommendations (wish we would’ve asked for more) & pay attention to that candle.

  1. I was there last month and had the crab cakes. They had some German sauerkaut/cabbage thing on top of them that really detracted from my usual favorite there. The atmosphere of this place is totally cool. Still a fan!
